Craw-Kan Team of the Week: Girard Trojans

Girard girls are on a four game winning streak.

This Week’s Craw-Kan Team of the Week from Southeast Kansas is the Girard High School girls basketball team led by head coach Brad Herlocker.

The Trojans, who moved back up to Class 4A this season, picked up a tournament championship over the weekend at the Wilson County Classic as they improved to 7-4 after Tuesdays CNC win over Baxter. Girard has won the last four games in a row over Bluestem, Fredonia, Cherryvale and Baxter. Girard is one of the most balanced teams in the area led by tournament averaged of Faith Poland at 10.7 ppg, Makaila Ausemus at 8.7, Lilian HOward at 6.7, Brookylyn Tallie at 5.7. Four other players all score at least three per game. Tallie leads the rebounders at 6.7, Droessler at 6.3, Howard at 6.7 with Olivia Cullen and Faith Poland at 4.7. Bailey Troike and Kinley Smith have also added some assists. Girard is deep playing 12 people in their tournament games with eight scoring in the first game, 11 in the second game and nine scoring in the title game.

Coach Herlocker has praised the defense recently as they held teams to 26.6% shooting over the tournament at Wilscon County including 31 percent from two and 12 percent from three pointer. The unit forced 22 turnovers and averaged 19.5 offensive rebounds per game vs. 11 per opponents.

Girard has been one of the most consistent basketball programs in Southeast Kansas over the last several seasons under Herlocker who led the school to its first ever state title in any sport in March of 2017 as the Trojans won the 4A-II state title.

The Lady Trojans are back in action this Friday against rival CNC program St. Mary’s Colgan on the road.
