This months Labette Bank Athlete of the Month from Southeast Kansas is recent Columbus High School graduate Landin Midgett. Midgett finished his last game as a Titan earlier this month by competing in the 50th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl in Hays, Kansas.
Midgett picked up five tackles in the game for the East. The 2023 graduate was a multiple sport all-state selection for Columbus while in high school. He also played in the 2023 KABC all-star game for the best all-state baseball players in the state this summer, a rare feat to play in both the shrine bowl and baseball all-star game. Midgett hit the only home run in the contest.
What might be the most impressive feat is that Midgett was playing a baseball game at 9 am in Joplin, Mo the day after playing in a football game that ended at 10 pm in Hays, Kansas. The two are five hours and 32 minutes away. It was the last tournament with his travel ball team, the Mustangs, a team comprised of the top players in Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri led by coach Tom Myers.
“I got home at 4 am and had to be in Joplin by 8 for a 9 am game.” Midgett said.
He was a first team all-state selection on defense in football this fall for Columbus as well as a two-time all-state selection in baseball for the Columbus Titans who would finish as state runner-up in 3A for the second consecutive year. While Midgett is best known for his honors to many, what he may be known by all of his coaches for is his leadership and making the players around him better.
In addition to all his duties as an athlete and student, Midgett is also an intern at ESPN 100.7 in Pittsburg for Mike Snow. Snow hosts a show with Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas.
“Landin is a great kid that I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the last few years. I am not surprised by his commitment to being a standout leader for Columbus. I first met him when he introduced himself to me and thanked us for our coverage a few years back at a school assembly in Columbus, Kansas. Not many sophomores would go out of their comfort zone to approach an adult that they dont know and introduce themselves. That always stood out to me on what kind of a person he is.” Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas said.
Midgett will play at Coffeyville Community College next season. Congrats to Landon on an outstanding high school career!
