The Labette Bank Athlete of the Month from the Southeast Kansas coverage area is Columbus High School senior guard Patrick Cassidy.
Cassidy, a 6-foot-0, senior, has been lighting up the scoreboard in 2019-2020. He is near the leaders in the state in scoring with a 27 points per game average so far this season. Cassidy, who earned second team 3A all-state honors from Sports in Kansas last season, also has his team at 5-2. Cassidy has scored at least 20 points in all of his games this season. He shoots nearly 39 percent from 3-pointer. It has been a complete turnaround of Columbus boys basketball with Cassidy over the last couple of seasons as the program hadn’t seen a lot of recent success. Cassidy also helped quarterback his football team to a 8-2 mark this season, one year after going 1-8.
The Titans, led by Jerry Smiley, will be back in action on Friday against Baxter Springs in an away game. Clay Saporito, an all league selection in football and all-state from SIK in baseball for the Titans, is also having a big year with eight points per game and six boards per contest. Austin Hosier is also chipping in six per game.
