Faces in KS: Kylee Scheer

Cheney High School junior Kylee Scheer is back after earning Sports in Kansas 3A Player of the Year honors as a sophomore last fall. Scheer helped her team to a runner-up finish in the Class 3A State Tournament in a highly competitive classification of several high-quality teams. The Cardinals lost 55-52 to Royal Valley in overtime coming up just short of the 3A crown in 2019.

Scheer, a 5-foot-8 versatile guard that can play the one, two or three spots, averaged 18.1 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, 3.6 steals and two assists per game last year. She broke a 31-year old scoring record in the opening round of the state tournament game last season by scoring 38 points in a state tournament game. She will look to be one of the top guards in all classes of Kansas this basketball season.

Scheer is also an all-league softball player as a leadoff and center fielder. She also earned all-state honors in volleyball this past year playing on the right side as a hitter and a digger in the back row. She is also a member of Wheat State Elite, one of the top basketball clubs in Kansas ran by Dylan Evans, in the off-season made up of top-notch high school girl’s players all over the state.

Scheer also has a 3.8 GPA and her favorite subject is English. Her plans are to study Elementary Education while playing basketball in college. She would like to ultimately become a coach someday.

Cheney, led by lead coach Rod Scheer, who is Kylee’s father, is 43-11 since Scheer stepped into high school. Scheer has a special bond with her father as the head coach and loves to play for him. The Cardinals have big expectations this year as they returned three starters including Scheer, Lexi Cline and Halley Jones. So far, they are off to a 5-1 mark this year. They are currently ranked #4 in 3A by the KBCA at the break.

Q&A w/ Scheer

How did you get involved in basketball and sports?

From the time I was about two years old I have been in the gym because my dad has been a coach my whole life and growing up I always went to my brother and sisters sporting events.

What are your goals this season?

My goals this season are to help my team get back to the state tournament and be a great leader on and off the court.

Do you guys have a shot to make a run this year?

Yes we do have a shot to make a run this year.

What makes you such a force as a player?

My quickness and my ability to shoot the ball from anywhere on the court.

What’s the atmosphere like to play for your school and town?

Cheney’s a great community that supports all of their student athletes. No matter how far the drive is there will always be a good crowd at the game.

For anyone that hasn’t seen one of your games, why come to one?

We play a face paced style of basketball. We like to push the ball up and down the court no matter what, and press like crazy. Our enthusiasm and wanting to win each game is something that can’t be beat. We play 110% from start to finish.

Who are other key players on your team?

Every player on our team this year will be key to our success.

Favorite thing about Basketball?

My favorite thing about basketball is the pace of the game and how much of a team sport it is.

What is it like to play for your coach?

Having my dad as my coach is something that I will cherish forever. He is the main reason why I have been so successful in basketball. He pushes us all to get better every day and treats every girl on the team like she is his daughter too.

What did you and the team do in the off-season to become better?
